Project Background

As there is a high rate of illiteracy in Liberia, Youth Crime Watch Liberia has set up a street library program to reduce illiteracy rates and support a culture of reading. We believe that everyone, regardless of their level of education or disability, deserves and has a right to access this information. As part of the Street Library Project you are taking part in an innovative and truly exciting program that not only reduces illiteracy but also supports African folklore, tradition and history.
The Street Library has an exciting array of activities that sparks a passion in children for reading. All activities are children/youth focused and have incredibly diverse methods and resources for spreading knowledge, stories and fun

JOB SUMMARY
He/she will work with children in the program to teach various reading levels. Teachers are to use reading strategies and methods to support reading acquisition, comprehension as well as increasing students’ vocabulary. Overall, teachers are to promote a culture of reading among Liberian children/youth.

The responsibilities of the Teacher are grounded in the mission and vision of Youth Crime
Watch of Liberia.
Core Responsibilities:

  • Maintain attendance records
  • Administer literacy tests to new students
  • Engage students in reading materials
  • Assist students in different reading workstations to maximize learning potential
  • Track the progress of each participant quarterly?????
  • Ensure gender sensitivity aspect of materials and activities at all times
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
    Requirements:
  • Be able to adapt to new environments.
  • A desire to improve literacy rates in small communities.
    Preferences (not required):
  • Prior NGO or volunteer experience
  • Prior teaching experience
