Youth Crime Watch of Liberia, in partnership with Green Cities, Inc., lunched ongoing Waste Management and Recycling Initiative, funded by the GIZ Public-Private Partnership Fund. This project is dedicated to promoting sustainable waste management practices and fostering environmental stewardship within Liberia’s communities. Key activities include:

  • Stakeholder Engagement Workshop
A comprehensive stakeholder engagement workshop was successfully held, bringing together 30 stakeholders in the waste sector, waste management experts, and key organizations. The workshop facilitated meaningful dialogue on the current challenges of waste management and explored sustainable solutions for recycling and waste reduction across Monrovia.
  • Awareness Campaign on Waste Management and Referral for Plastic and Other Waste
We have launched an extensive awareness campaign aimed at educating community members about the importance of proper waste management and recycling. Through this initiative, individuals and businesses are being referred to Green Cities, Inc. for plastic and other types of waste, encouraging a more efficient system of waste disposal and recycling.
  • Trilateral Partnership with the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA)
A trilateral partnership has been established with the Liberia Marketing Association, aimed at enhancing waste management efforts within markets across Monrovia. This collaboration has enabled us to introduce recycling practices within these commercial hubs, targeting both vendors and buyers in promoting sustainable practices. The initiative breathed the establishment of 7 buy-back centers around 7-markets in Monrovia.
  • Training of Trainers (ToT) on Waste Management and Recycling.
In order to scale our impact, a Training of Trainers (ToT) session was conducted with 200 waste collectors including community-based enterprises, focusing on key waste management and recycling techniques. This training equips waste collectors and waste management professionals with the knowledge to train others within their respective communities. These 1800 Local community dwellers and informal waste collectors were being trained after TOT sessions with the 200 waste collectors to build the capacity of these individuals to improve waste collection practices and enhance recycling rates within their neighborhoods.
  • Establishment/Support to 7-Buy Back Centers
As part of efforts to enhance buy-back center operations, through funding from the GIZ PPP project, Youth Crime Watch of Liberia procured and provided PPE (Robber gloves, nose masks, work suits raincoats, safety boots Eye protectors wheelbarrows, weighing scales and shovels) to Green Cities, Inc. to support the effectiveness of buy-back centers across Montserrado County. This initiative will enhance safety measures while waste is collected, sorted, and transported for recycling purposes.
